Before quitting my government job in 2022, I practiced assertiveness by expressing my needs and wants that I believed were necessary to carry out my duties and responsibilities as an employee. I was met with more “no”s’ than “yes”s’. Some “no”s’ were reasonable and others were not, they were hurtful. I didn’t fully understand that my mind and everyone else’s mind ran with a “software code” created by our own reality. I had a really hard time understanding why my employer could not see why my “right” was right and reasonable when I expressed it so clearly! My employer and I did not share the same realities.
Realities have unique experiences, truths, vulnerabilities, defenses, philosophies, judgements, points of view, principles, conclusions, personalities, and assumptions. Your reality will more often than not clash with a fellow human’s reality. That human could be a classmate, teacher, parent, sibling, significant other, school counselor, or therapist. You create friendships with classmates. You learn from teachers. You’re guided by your parents. You play with your siblings. You care for your significant other. You are advised by your school counselor. You’re treated by your therapist. All of these relationships with other people require both of you to see what it is like to think like the other person in order to give power to the relationship. If power becomes one-sided, it can become a battle of the wills or hurtful to you or harmful to the other and helpful to none.
In the Butron Method, I would like you to replace the word reality with the word thinking. In our coaching sessions, there will be my thinking, and there will be your thinking. The relationship between a coach and the smart teen exists only to address the goals of the smart teen - your goals. You and I will give power to that relationship. I, the coach, will hold the vision of what is possible and you, the smart teen, will choose the topic, action, and results you want.
My mission is to help you smart, high-achieving teens learn the connection between critical thinking and stress reduction. I offer 1-on-1 coaching sessions, programs, and workshops to help achieve academic success, stress reduction, increased creativity, and better critical thinking skills.
